Welcome!
Welcome! Chances are good you found this blog by searching for something about fraternities or sororities.
I was the last person anyone would have suspected of joining a sorority in college. I am sure I would have agreed with them, too.
When I made my way to Syracuse University, I saw the houses with the Greek letters that edged Walnut Park, and wished I could tour them. My roommate suggested I sign up for rush (as it was then called, today it’s known as recruitment) and go through the house tour round and then drop out of rush. It sounded like a plan. I didn’t realize that I would end up feeling at home at one of the chapters. And that I would become a member.
In this blog I will share the history of GLOs and other topics. I wrote a dissertation on “Coeducation and the History of Women’s Fraternities 1867-1902.″ It chronicles the growth of the system and the birth of the National Panhellenic Conference.
My Master’s thesis details the history of the fraternity system at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1948-1960. The dates are significant ones and the thesis is available on the top menu.
I have done research at the Student Life Archives and have written several histories of University of Illinois fraternity chapters for the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing.
Thanks for stopping by.

95 Years Ago a Pi Phi and a Phi Gam Became FLOTUS and POTUS
I should call this blog “I get by with a little help from my friends.” This time it was a post by the Phi Gamma Delta Archives (and Archivist Towner Blackstock) that reminded me about the events of the early … Continue reading
#IAmASororityWoman and #myFraternity
The excitement of fraternity and sorority recruitment is in the air. Today is August 1 and it signals the start of Delta Gamma’s #IAmASororityWoman campaign. I love sharing the stories of all Greek-letter organizations connecting the past to the present … Continue reading
An AEPhi Tribute, a ZBT Treasure, and a Pi Phi Story
I was looking at the Alpha Epsilon Phi website and came across this wonderful tribute to Margery Rosen Mendelson, a 1938 initiate of the AEPhi chapter at the University of Missouri. She became a member because of the “wonderful stories … Continue reading
The Unveiling of a Sculpture Begins P.E.O.’s 150th Celebration

Apollo 11, Fraternity Pins on the Moon, and Sally Ride
It’s the anniversary of man walking on the moon. It’s an apt day to once again bust some myths still flying around social media land. CLAIM: “Every Apollo 11 astronaut was a fraternity man.” FALSE. There were three men aboard … Continue reading

The Best Fraternities and Sororities to Join?
I dislike those “the best sororities with the most gorgeous houses” or the “top ten fraternities to join if you want to be President of the United States” posts on the web. They are bogus, likely click-bait, and serve no … Continue reading
