You're a wonderful and loyal student, Kylie, and I appreciate your insight. Lucky for me I have no old Latin teachers in my past so I'll be on board with that classical Latin pronunciation when all the Alumn(eye) Associations in American colleges and universities start using the Alum(knee) pronunciation. And I'm not sure why the stupid Fran Becque, Ph.D. thing is showing up. One of these days, I will figure this blogging stuff out!

You'll want to cover your ears around Kappas! We teach our members to use the classical Latin pronunciation where AE sounds like eye and a long i like in Alumni sounds like the ee in knee. I fear my old Latin teacher would haunt me if we didn't!

I trust that you know that Alpha Gamma Delta's Alpha chapter was recolonized in either 2011 or 2012, can't remember which, but I'm sure that our headquarters can give you the years that we did everything. The chapter is now sailing!

Thanks for the question. I copied the quotes as they were written. NPC, the National Panhellenic Conference of the 26 women's fraternities/sororities, went through many name changes in its early years. It was first known as the Inter-Sorority Conference, National Panhellenic Congress and the hyphen in Panhellenic appeared and disappeared, especially when it appeared in the fraternity/sorority magazines. NPHC, the National Pan-Hellenic Council was incorporated in 1929, so there really would not have been any confusion when these items were written in 1912.

Why do all of these say Pan-Hellenic instead of Panhellenic? NPC is Panhellenic. There is an organization know as Pan-Hellenic but it is not the 26 NPC organizations. Just wondering why these references are hyphenated.

I thoroughly enjoyed your post on the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Cottey College. As an alumna and doctoral student in education, Cottey's magic has never left me. The college and the women's organization that runs it are both near and dear to my heart, mind, and soul. I would love to speak with you sometime--perhaps email--about this topic. I'm fascinated by the work you do!
